 Life Sciences Fellowship Funding Opportunities

The following is a list of the most popular fellowship awards in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Please check the site for the most current information.

American Cancer Society

Awards are made for one to three years with progressive stipends of $35,000, $37,000, and $40,000 per year, plus a $2,000 per year institutional allowance. Application deadlines are March 1 and October 1. Must be a US citizen, non-citizen national or permanent residence.

American Heart Association

Awards are made for two years with $30,000 per year for PI stipend. Additional $3,000 per year for supplies and travel (travel limited to $1,000/year). No fringe benefits or institutional indirect costs allowed. Refer to guidelines for citizenship qualifications.

Burroughs Wellcome Fund

Cancer Awards in the Biomedical Sciences provide $500,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the early years of faculty service. Researchers may be working in any of the basic biomedical sciences. Application deadline is October 1. Must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada. Harvard is able to nominate up to 6 candidates for the Career Award.

Cancer Research Institute

Fellowships are awarded for a three-year period. The stipend for new fellows is $40,000 for the first year, $42,000 for the second, and $44,000 for the third. A yearly allowance of $1,500 is provided to the host institution to help meet expenses for research supplies, travel to scientific meetings and health insurance incurred on behalf of the fellow. Deadlines are April 1 and October 1. Citizenship is unrestricted.

Charles A. King Trust/Medical Foundation

Two-year stipends are awarded to fellows with a minimum of two, and a maximum of five, years of full-time full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application. Awards range from $36,000 - $41,000 depending on years of experience. Award cycle is annual, with awards starting July 1. United States citizenship is not required.

Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation

The fellowship is for a period of three years. Stipend is $39,000 for the first year, $41,000 for the second, and $43,000 for the third with a $2,000 institutional allowance per year. Applicants must have a PhD. with no more than one year of experience. Foreign candidates may apply to do their research only in the United States. Application deadlines are August 15, December 15 and March 15.

David and Lucille Packard Fellowships

Every year, the Foundation invites the presidents of 50 universities to nominate two young professors from each of their institutions. fellows receive individual grants of $125,000 per year for five years. Check website for more details.

Helen Hay Whitney Foundation

The fellowship is for a period of three years. Stipend is $39,000 for the first year, $40,500 for the second and $43,000 for the third, with a $2,000 research allowance per year. Applicants should have less than a year of postdoctoral experience. No more than two fellows may work in a given laboratory at one time. Applicaiton forms become available March 15 each year. Deadline is August 15.

Human Frontier Science Program

Fellowships provide young scientists with up to three years of postdoctoral research training in an outstanding laboratory in another country. The third year of the fellowship can be used either for reatriation to the Fellow's country or in the host laboratory. The fellowships provide approximately $US45,000 per year, including allowances for travel and research expenses. The deadline to applications is Deptember 1. To be eligible, a fellow mlust either come from or go to a member country. A list of member countries is available on the website.

Huntington's Disease Society of America

Fellowship awards are available in the amount of up to $80,000 over two years. Deadline for applications is December 15 annually.

Irvington Institute for Immunological Research

Fellowships provide stipends of $37,000, $40,000 and $43,000 for years one, two and three. Priority is given to candidates with no more than three years of postdoctoral experience. A lab may qualify for only one fellow per year. Citizenship is unrestricted. Check web site for current deadlines.

Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research

The basic stipend is $37,000 for the first year, $39,000 for the second, and $41,000 for the third. There is a research allownace of $1,000. Applicants should have no more than one year of postdoctoral experience. Deadline if February 1. Citizenship is unrestricted.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Awards are for up to two years and amounts are based on years of relevant postdoctoral experience. Stipends range from $28,000 to $40,000 per year with a research allowance of $5,000. Deadlines are September 1 and February 1. Citizenship is unrestricted

Leukemia Research Foundation

Fellowships awards are for $35,000 per year for two years. Fellows must have at least one year of postdoctoral experience. Applications are due by February 15. Citizenship is unrestricted.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Fellowships are for $40,000 (stipend $37,500 + $2,500 institutional averhead) per year for three years. Special Fellows awards are for those who have at least two years of postdoctoral training and are continuing their research under the direction of a reseach sponsor. Special Fellow awards are for $50,000 (stipend $47,000 + $3,000 institutional overhead) per year for three years. Full applications must be received by October 1. Citizenship is unrestricted.

Life Sciences Research Foundation

The fellowship award is $51,000 per year and is meant to be a mini-grant. The salary scale begins at $30,000 for a first-year postdoctoral, $33,000 for a second year, and $36,000 thereafter. The remainder can be used for finge benefits, travel and researhc expenses. There can be no more than one LSRF fellow in any one laboratory at a time. The deadline for applications is October 1. Citizenship is unrestricted.

National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award

Award offers three years at the postdoctoral level. NRSAs provide a stipend to the awardee plus an institutional allowance to the sponsoring institution. Stipends are based on the applicant's years of experience and range from $31,092 to $48,852 per year. To be eligible for this fellowhsip, you must be a US citizen, a noncitizen national, or a permanent resident by the earliest possible start date of the fellowship award. Deadlines are April 5, August 5 and December 5.
