International SOS Travel Assistance Program
What is International SOS?
International SOS (I-SOS) provides 24-hour, worldwide emergency medical care and security evacuation services when traveling abroad.
Who can use I-SOS’ services?
Anyone traveling on University business or for a University-related activity is eligible if they are:
- A student registered in a degree- or certificate-granting program (including Summer School Study Abroad students and student traveling with an officially recognized student organization)
- A benefits-eligible Harvard employee or a Harvard employee stationed abroad
- An immediate family member (spouse, life partner, dependent child) of the above
What is “University business” or a “University-related activity?”
University business and University-related activities include any activity that can be broadly construed as part of academic or professional work at Harvard, including research, study abroad, attendance at a conference or even a summer job or internship if registered at Harvard the following fall.
Personal travel, including vacations or travel home to visit family is not covered.
Does I-SOS replace health insurance?
No! I-SOS is not health insurance. Travelers should try to pay for the cost of medical care while abroad. If unable to pay, I-SOS can pay the clinic or health care provider on the traveler’s behalf. However, Harvard and I-SOS expect reimbursement for medical care payments and expect the traveler to arrange the reimbursement. Therefore, travelers should familiarize themselves with their insurance provider’s policies on overseas coverage.
Before traveling abroad:
- Print an I-SOS card
(PIN required) or obtain one from the Office of International Programs. - Visit the I-SOS site and enter travel itinerary and contact information by clicking on Personal Travel Record and entering Harvard’s I-SOS ID number, 11BSGC000038. This allows I-SOS to reach travelers in case of emergency.
- Carefully review current health, safety and security advisories for travel destination(s).
- Become familiar with health insurance provider’s policies on overseas coverage and payment requirements.
If there is an emergency while traveling abroad:
- Call I-SOS, collect where possible, at the numbers on the back on the membership card.
- Pay for medical expenses and collect receipts for reimbursement from health insurance provider. If unable to pay, I-SOS can pay for medical care, but Harvard will expect reimbursement.
After traveling abroad:
If I-SOS paid for medical care, Harvard will bill the traveler for the cost when it receives an invoice from I-SOS. The Benefits Office can assist with seeking reimbursement from health insurance providers.
